Dr. Josephine D’Abbondanza
MD, MSc, FRCSC

Dr. Josephine D’Abbondanza is a plastic surgeon who brings together technical precision, creativity, and an appreciation for the individuality of each patient. Growing up in a family of tailors, she was surrounded by a tradition in which attention to detail and an understanding of individual form were essential. These qualities find a natural parallel in plastic surgery, a specialty she was drawn to for its artistry, its capacity for innovation, and the fact that no two surgical challenges are exactly alike.
Her clinical practice encompasses a wide range of reconstructive and aesthetic breast and body procedures, including complex breast reconstruction, correction of congenital breast deformities, and revision breast surgery. Across these areas of practice, Dr. D’Abbondanza recognizes that every patient brings different motivations, concerns, and goals to the surgical process. She believes the best outcomes begin with a partnership between surgeon and patient, built on careful listening and open, honest conversations about what surgery can realistically achieve. Her approach emphasizes individualized surgical planning, thoughtful guidance, and natural-looking results.
Recognizing that the decision to undergo surgery is deeply personal, Dr. D’Abbondanza believes patients should feel informed, comfortable asking questions, and actively involved in decisions about their care. Despite the technical nature of surgery, she is mindful that every patient is an individual, not simply a procedure. She prioritizes meaningful patient relationships built on kindness, authenticity, and honest communication, including transparent discussions about surgical limitations, alternatives, and whether surgery is the right choice.
Dr. D’Abbondanza completed her plastic surgery residency at the University of Toronto, followed by fellowship training in reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Manitoba and breast reconstruction at the University of British Columbia. She is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is an Assistant Professor at McMaster University, where she practises at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
Her commitment to advancing surgical care extends to research, education, and mentorship. Dr. D’Abbondanza holds a Master of Science from the University of Toronto and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on breast reconstruction, surgical outcomes, and patient education. Her contributions to teaching have been recognized with several awards, including the 2025 Plastic Surgery Faculty Award at McMaster University, the 2023 D.R. Wilson Teaching Award from the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery, and the 2021 Dr. Hugh G. Thomson Humanitarian Award.
Dr. D’Abbondanza also contributes to the advancement of plastic surgery literature as a reviewer for Plastic Surgery and a Next Generation Editor for the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. In 2025, she was recognized among the journal’s Top 50 Reviewers. She is a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
At The Plastic Surgery Clinic, Dr. D’Abbondanza joins a team whose surgical expertise, collaborative approach, and commitment to patient-centred care reflect the values that guide her own practice. She looks forward to contributing to an environment where thoughtful, individualized care and surgical excellence go hand in hand.
