Minor Procedures

If you’ve been an avid earring wearer for most of your life, especially large heavy earrings, or if you’ve used plugs in order to create a larger hole in your earlobe, or if you’ve simply been unlucky and had your earlobe split due to an accident, at The Plastic Surgery Clinic we can now repair your split earlobe without a referral from your family doctor.
Split earlobes are exactly what you might think they are. They are a split in your earlobe where you would normally have an ear piercing. In some cases the split is simply a small hole that is elongated or made larger and in others the result is a full split of the earlobe. In either case, once an earlobe is split the only way to correct it is surgically.
Split earlobes are usually the result of wearing large or heavy earrings over many years. The weight and natural ageing process may in this instance cause your earring piercing to tear. However, split earlobes can also be the result of wearing earring plugs that serve to make your piercing larger, or could also be an allergic reaction to certain metals worn in the ear. You may also have a split earlobe due to an unforeseen injury.
At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we will first invite you to come in for an in person consultation in order for one of our plastic surgeons to evaluate the extent of your split earlobe. This will involve a medical history as well as an examination of your split earlobe. You will then be booked for your split earlobe corrective procedure.
The split earlobe procedure is quite simple and only takes anywhere from 10-15 minutes (depending on the complexity of your case). Using a local anesthetic in order to minimize any pain or discomfort your doctor will proceed to repair your split earlobe by surgically removing the skin around the split earlobe in order to create a favourable surface that will allow your earlobe to heal itself.
During the procedure your doctor will also have to close up any piercing you may have in the area. Your earlobe should completely heal after 6-8 weeks after which you can pierce your ear again, though you may want to avoid the exact location in which you previously had the split.
You will be able to return to you regular activities immediately following your procedure as long as they don’t have a direct effect on your treated earlobe(s) repair.
You will be given a firm quote following an in person consultation with one of our plastic surgeons. The cost of the correction of a split earlobe is dependent on the complexity of your case.
In some cases OHIP will cover certain minor procedures, however OHIP will typically not cover the correction of a split earlobe.
As long as your earlobe is not injured again for any reason, your split earlobe corrective surgery should be permanent.
