Pyogenic Granuloma

You may have suddenly noticed a bright red bump that kind of looks like a raspberry on either your child or yourself. It can look a little alarming, but it’s a harmless growth known as a pyogenic granuloma. Although harmless, depending on where it is located it can be bothersome, unsightly, or even at times bleed.

Whatever the reason you may want your pyogenic granuloma removed you can now have it removed by one of our expert doctors at The Plastic Surgery Clinic without first having to get a referral from your family doctor.

What is a Pyogenic Granuloma?

A pyogenic granuloma is a growth that typically comes about from a collection of blood vessels. It is harmless and non-cancerous but it can cause cosmetic concerns, be irritating, or even bleed, depending on its size and where it is located.

Although anyone can get a pyogenic granuloma, they are more common in children, adolescents, and pregnant women.

Pyogenic granulomas can grow pretty much anywhere on the body though they are most often found on the hands, fingers, arms, back, chest, neck, and face.

It is not entirely known what causes pyogenic granulomas but they often stem from a skin lesion, a scratch, cut, or bug bite and grow quite quickly. In pregnant women pyogenic granulomas often occur due to the various hormonal changes that are taking place in the body.

Pyogenic granulomas are benign growths that are harmless and typically don’t need to be treated, especially if they are small. If smaller in size there is a chance they may go away on their own. If they are larger then you may want to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they are causing discomfort.

The Pyogenic Granuloma Removal Procedure

You will first be invited to come in for a free consultation with one of our doctors. The consultation will involve a physical examination of your pyogenic granuloma and a medical history. Following your consultation, we will schedule an appointment to remove your pyogenic granuloma if necessary.

If you are pregnant, your doctor may recommend that you wait until after the pregnancy to see whether your pyogenic granuloma will go away on its own, since it is often the result of pregnancy hormonal changes.

At The Plastic Surgery clinic our goal is for your minor procedure to be worry and pain free, and as pleasant of an experience as possible. During your removal procedure, your doctor will administer a local anesthetic that may cause a small sting, after which you will feel nothing at all. Depending on the size and complexity of your pyogenic granuloma, your growth will most likely be surgically removed and stitched up. Your procedure should take no more than 20-30 minutes.

Scarring should be minimal. Our doctors will  teach you how to care for your scar in order to ensure that it heals correctly and is eventually barely noticeable.

Pyogenic granuloma removal requires minimal downtime. You can return to work and your regular activities immediately following your procedure. Your doctor may ask you to avoid strenuous exercise for about a week in order to ensure that you don’t re-injure the treated are.

The Cost of Pyogenic Granuloma Removal

The cost of pyogenic granuloma removal is dependent on the complexity of your procedure. You will receive a firm quote once you have had your consultation with your doctor.

Some minor procedures are covered by OHIP. We will send a referral to OHIP in order to verify whether the removal of your pyogenic granuloma will be covered.

How Long Does Pyogenic Granuloma Removal Last?

Pyogenic granulomas can return following removal, however if fully removed surgically there is less of a chance that they will return in the treated area.
