Seborrheic Keratoses

Ageing and genetics sometimes bring about unwanted lumps and bumps like seborrheic keratoses. Although harmless, these dark scaly growths can be unsightly and also cause discomfort when coming into contact with clothing.

At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we can remove your seborrheic keratoses without a referral from your family doctor.

What is Seborrheic Keratoses?

A seborrheic keratoses is a benign skin growth that is unsightly but harmless. It tends to be on the darker side, light or dark brown, or black. It is often raised and scaly and typically grows on the chest, back, scalp or neck, but can also appear on the face or other areas of the body. A seborrheic keratoses can be a small growth but can also grow to be larger than 1 inch in size.

A seborrheic keratoses typically does not need to be treated, but because it is unsightly and can in some cases become irritated and bleed when coming into contact with clothing, most patients prefer to have it removed. You can have multiple seborrheic keratoses on different parts of your body.

Although a seborrheic keratoses is harmless it can sometimes resemble melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer, so it’s always best to get this type of skin condition checked out by a doctor to rule out anything that could potentially be more problematic.

The reasons for the formation of a seborrheic keratoses are unknown, but they tend to appear in middle age and are generally tied to genetics.

The Seborrheic Keratoses Removal Procedure

You will first be invited to come in for a free consultation with one of our doctors. The consultation will involve a physical examination of your seborrheic keratoses and a medical history. Following your consultation, you will have an appointment scheduled for the removal of your seborrheic keratoses if necessary.

At The Plastic Surgery clinic we want to make any minor procedure as pleasant and painless as possible. Your doctor will administer a local anesthetic that may cause a small sting, after which you will feel nothing at all. Your seborrheic keratoses will be surgically removed.

Scarring should be minimal. You may find that your skin is lighter in the area where your seborrheic keratoses was removed, but this will become unnoticeable in time.

Seborrheic keratoses removal requires minimal downtime. You can return to work and your regular activities immediately following your procedure. Your doctor may ask you to avoid strenuous exercise for about a week in order to ensure that you don’t re-injure the treated are.

The Cost of Seborrheic Keratoses Removal

The cost of seborrheic keratoses removal is dependent on the complexity of your procedure. You will receive a firm quote once you have had your consultation with your doctor.

Some minor procedures are covered by OHIP, but because seborrheic keratoses is not a condition that needs to be treated, OHIP will typically not cover seborrheic keratoses removal. We will send a referral to OHIP in order to verify whether this procedure will be covered.

How Long Does Seborrheic Keratoses Removal Last?

When entirely removed a seborrheic keratoses should not grow back in the treated area. If something that looks like a seborrheic keratoses were to grow back in the area where it was removed, it is best to follow up with your doctor immediately as the growth may be something else.
