If the summer has ended and you’re left with some greyish-brown patches on your skin after a tan, you may have something called melasma. Although harmless, melasma can cause you to feel self-conscious or anxious about your appearance, especially if it is located on your face. At The Plastic Surgery Clinic and MD Beauty Clinic we have a number of ways that we can treat your melasma.
Melasma otherwise known as chloasma is a type of skin condition that can be caused by sun exposure, but can also be the result of hormonal changes (particularly during pregnancy), thyroid problems, birth control pills, or even stress. When it occurs in pregnant women melasma is also known as “the mask of pregnancy.” It typically affects women more often than men, but can also occur in men.
Melasma occurs when your pigment cells become overactive and produce too much pigment on certain areas of the face and/or body. Melasma usually appears symmetrically, so if you get it on one side of the face, you will most likely see it on the other as well.
Melasma can emerge anywhere on the body, but tends to appear on areas of your body that are most exposed to the sun such as on areas of the face, like the cheeks, forehead, and nose, but also on areas like the neck and arms.
There is no one go to treatment for melasma. In order to treat your melasma we will invite you to have a complimentary consultation with one of our doctors at The Plastic Surgery Clinic or MD Beauty Clinic. They will assess your melasma and take a thorough medical history. Based on your consultation they will then prescribe a combination of treatments that will help to reduce and reverse the appearance of your melasma.
In order to treat melasma we typically recommend a combination of the following treatments:
Miracle 10 Skincare
PicoWay Resolve
Microneedling Beauty Boosters
Miracle 10 Facial Peel
Miracle 10 Body Peel
Keep in mind that melasma may take months to treat, it’s not a condition that can resolve itself overnight, so you’ll need to follow a good skincare regimen, take the appropriate precautions and be patient with your skin.
The cost of melasma treatment is dependent on the type of treatment plan our doctors will prescribe for you depending on your needs. These can range from prescribing a range of Miracle 10 skincare products to be used at home to beauty booster treatments like Redensity I that can help to improve on the uniformity of your skin.
Once you’ve had your free consultation with one of our doctors we’ll be able to give you a quote for your customized treatment plan.
Melasma can be tricky to treat. The goal is to first identify what is causing the melasma in the first place. If it is sun exposure, you’ll need to be really careful about shielding your skin from the sun and using sunscreen regularly. If it’s a hormonal imbalance, that will need to be addressed accordingly by your doctor. If it’s caused by pregnancy, you’ll see it resolve itself following your pregnancy.
That said, once the root cause has been identified and you adopt a good skincare routine and avoid what caused your melasma; once cleared, you should be able to keep it that way. Melasma, however, can be quick to return if its root cause is still a factor.
