Mole Removal

We all have them. Fun fact is that the large majority of the moles that we have are actually predetermined before we are even born. On average individuals have anywhere between 10-40 moles on different parts of their body. That doesn’t mean we all have to like them though.

Although in most cases moles are harmless and are rarely cancerous, some of us may not enjoy the way they look. At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we can now remove any moles you desire without a referral from your doctor.

What is a Mole?

Moles are a very common type of pigmented skin growth that all of us have on various parts of our bodies. They typically appear as light or dark brown spots on your skin, but they also come in many different shapes and sizes and can range in colour from light brown to black to even pink or blue.

Some moles also change over time, so it is important to keep an eye on any moles that might be a cause for concern. Although very rare, melanoma, a type of skin cancer, is usually detected based on the appearance of an irregular mole.

That said, most moles are harmless and do not need to be treated, however some patients would prefer a mole to be removed for aesthetic purposes.

The Mole Removal Procedure

We will first book an appointment for you for a free consultation with one of our expert plastic surgeons. The consultation will involve a physical examination of your mole and a medical history. Following your consultation, you will have an appointment scheduled for the removal of your mole.

During your procedure, your doctor will administer a local anesthetic to the treated area. This may cause a little sting but once the area in question is completely anesthetized you can rest assured that the rest of your procedure will be pain free.

Depending on the size and shape of your mole your doctor will then proceed to remove your mole either via a shave excision technique or a direct excision that will require stitches. You will most likely have a faint scar in the area from which your mole has been removed, but with time your scar should fade to being almost unnoticeable. Our expert surgeons will do everything they can to make sure scarring is minimal.

Your doctor will recommend ways to care for the affected area at home.

In most cases you can return to your normal work schedule and/or daily activities following your procedure. Depending on the type of work that you do, you will need to take care that your work or any other activities do not negatively affect the treated area.

Cost of Mole Removal

You will be given a firm quote once one of our surgeons has personally examined you at your consultation, as the cost of mole removal is dependent on the complexity of your case.

In some cases OHIP will cover certain minor procedures, however the removal of a benign mole is typically not covered by OHIP.

How Long Will Mole Removal Last?

Once removed your mole should not grow back in the area that was treated. That said if any cells do remain under the skin it is possible for the mole to reappear. If you notice that your mole is growing back in the same area please contact your doctor right away.
