Of all of the surgeries we perform, breast augmentation remains the most popular year after year. In fact, we perform over 400 breast augmentations annually, making our practice one of the most experienced in Canada. We know that our prospective patients have a lot of important questions. One of the biggest: how much do breast implants cost?
As with all questions about this procedure (saline or silicone? what size is right for me? which incision placement is best? low profile or high profile? round or tear drop implant shape?) there is no simple, one-size-fits-all answer. So let’s break down all of the factors that make up the cost of the operation.
The Price of Breast Implants
First and foremost, there’s the cost of the actual implants used in your procedure. It’s true that saline breast implants typically cost less than cohesive gel silicone implants as a result of the difference in materials used. The saline that fills that type of implant is understandably less technologically advanced and therefore costs less than the form stable silicone used in breast implants today.
Form stable or cohesive gel silicone is used in order to prevent silicone from leaving the implant in the rare event that the shell is ruptured. Sometimes these are known as “gummy bear” breast implants—imagine something that is soft to the touch but maintains its shape as a soft solid, similar to a gummy bear. In this case, the higher cost contributes to an essential safeguard for your health and wellbeing, while still creating a natural-looking and feeling result.
Other Breast Augmentation Costs
The price of breast augmentation also covers the cost of general anesthesia, specialized surgical equipment and tools, surgical facility fees, nursing costs, and fees related to the experience and skill of your surgical team.
At The Plastic Surgery Clinic, our highly trained, board certified anesthesiologist will oversee and regulate your anesthetic throughout your entire operation from start to finish. They will be there as you wake up to monitor you to ensure your safety.
We’re one of the only clinics that uses the Keller Funnel for every breast augmentation. It looks like a very simple tool, but it’s essential for lowering the risk of capsular contracture, preventing infection, preventing damage to the implant, preventing damage to you, and it allows us to use the smallest incision possible, which means the scar left behind can be virtually imperceptible. It may look simple, but it’s an essential, specialized tool and we want every patient to benefit from it.
Immediately after your surgery, we will also provide you with a Pain Relief Pump™ to help manage your pain with a 24-hour local anaesthetic. It means our patients usually do not need to take prescription pain medications the day following surgery, which sometimes bring on side effects like nausea or vomiting. It helps you to feel more comfortable, to heal more quickly, and to reduce the time it takes to get back on your feet.
Another aspect of this operation that can affect the price is the experience and skill of the surgeon and team that performs it. Studies show that surgeries performed in high volumes—meaning greater experience and practice for the surgeon—lead to the most successful outcomes. Similar to professions in many other fields, the more experience and education a person has, the higher their skill level, which is then reflected in their fee.
