What Differentiates the Asian Blepharoplasty Technique

Asian-Blepharoplasty

By Dr. Frank Lista, MD., FRCSC., Medical Director and Founder, The Plastic Surgery Clinic

If you’ve spent any time exploring our website, or if you’ve ever come in for a free consultation with us, you know that one of our top priorities is to always create a natural looking result. It’s imperative that every procedure and treatment we provide is totally customized to the individual patient so we can achieve a natural look.

When people first hear the term Asian blepharoplasty, different assumptions might come to mind. Why is this procedure directed towards a specific ethnicity? There’s actually a very important reason for this designation that is all about delivering a customized, natural result. It’s definitely not about creating a westernized or Caucasian appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, is a surgical procedure that addresses the skin, muscle, and fatty tissue around the eyes. It’s probably most well known for its ability to help create a more youthful or refreshed appearance around the eyes and can be performed on the upper, lower, or both eyelids to create the desired result. Typically we see patients in their 40s, 50s and above who are interested in this approach.

But we also have patients who are interested in blepharoplasty who don’t have a need or interest in addressing the signs of aging. Operating in Toronto and Mississauga, we’re lucky to meet patients from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. At our practice, we meet a number of patients of East Asian descent who want to make small changes to the appearance of their eyelids.

At the same time, they are absolutely not interested in erasing any evidence of their racial heritage, as that’s not the goal of Asian Blepharoplasty. Rather, this particular type of surgery is intended to address the very subtle structural differences that occur in patients of East Asian descent. We want to achieve the patient’s goals while maintaining the most natural look possible: one that respects and maintains the markers of each patient’s racial background.

What Differentiates the Asian Blepharoplasty Technique?

The main characteristic that differentiates Asian Blepharoplasty is the way in which it addresses the crease in the upper eyelid. Patients who are interested in this procedure are often unhappy with the position of their upper eyelid crease or have no crease at all. By changing the positioning and appearance of this crease, the eye may appear larger and more in line with the patient’s desired facial proportions.

A highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeon will have a thorough understanding of the anatomical nuances that contribute to an excellent result for these patients.
