Abdominoplasty or ‘tummy tuck’ is a procedure that is performed to reshape the tummy and waistline. Abdominoplasty may also be combined with liposuction (i.e., lipoabdominoplasty) in selected patients to enhance abdominal contour. In particular, excess skin is removed, the rectus or ‘six pack’ muscles may be tightened, and the belly button is reshaped and/or repositioned. Many women after pregnancy choose to have a tummy tuck to restore their abdomen to a more youthful, toned and flatter appearance. In recent years, we have also been performing abdominoplasty on patients that have lost significant weight through diet and exercise or even after weight loss surgery. Many of our patients are very active, maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. However, despite these healthy lifestyle habits, problems such as excess skin and rectus diastasis (i.e., where the six pack muscles have become stretched and separate from one another in the midline) do not improve.
At the Plastic Surgery Clinic, Dr. Lista and I perform over 100 tummy tucks in Toronto and Mississauga per year. Performing tummy tuck surgery is very rewarding because our patients are extremely happy with the positive change in their appearance that they could not achieve without surgery. For many of our patients, they are happy to see a return of their tummies to an appearance similar to before pregnancy. For patients that have experienced massive weight loss, they may see improvement in the appearance of their abdomens to a degree which they have never had. We have one of the most extensive experiences in Canada performing tummy tuck surgeries on Mississauga and Toronto patients that have had previous weight loss surgery including Lap-Band®, gastric bypass and gastric sleeve.
Dr. Lista and I coauthored a journal article in the March 2012 issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal describing our extensive experience performing abdominoplasty surgery. We use a patient centred approach to improve patient comfort and safety to maximize results and avoid complications. Our approach performing abdominoplasty as a day surgery is described. We have developed a technique that includes avoiding the use of drains (i.e., drainless tummy tuck) and using local anesthetic pain infusion pumps (The Pain Relief Pump™) after surgery to prevent discomfort and improve recovery.
