Because of its name, we often associate the mommy makeover as a post-pregnancy surgery for women. And that is in theory what it is. At The Plastic Surgery Clinic the majority of mommy makeovers that we perform are on women who have experienced major transformations to their bodies due to pregnancy.
These include sudden weight gain and weight loss following pregnancy, but also other transformations such as changes to the breasts after pregnancy and nursing, and torn abdominal wall muscles that may have come about as a result of childbirth—yup, sounds bad, but it happens a lot and shows just how powerful a woman’s body is to be able to withstand labour and childbirth.
Despite its name the mommy makeover is not just for “mommies.” It’s also an extremely effective surgery for patients who have experienced massive weight loss.
The mommy makeover is really another name for a combination surgery, which dependent on your needs could include a breast lift or an alternative procedure for the upper body, such as a breast augmentation or breast reduction, along with an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and potentially liposuction.
What is great about the mommy makeover is that because it’s a combination procedure your recovery time ends up being shorter than if you had all of these procedures done separately. That said, it still is one of the more extensive procedures that we perform here at The Plastic Surgery Clinic, and you need to be prepared for a relatively long recovery time.

How can the mommy makeover help? Well, the mommy makeover combines procedures that we also perform on patients who have experienced massive weight loss. Many patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss will often lose the bulk of their weight around the abdomen, and no matter how hard you exercise you cannot get rid of excess skin without surgery.
The tummy tuck is an extremely effective procedure that removes excess skin around the middle and lower abdomen, and reveals the beautiful flat tummy that patients have worked so hard for. Liposuction will remove fat and add contour to target areas like around the abdomen and thighs.
As for breast surgeries, after dramatic weight loss some women may find that they also have excess skin in the area, or that their breasts now sag excessively, have deflated, or are not proportionate to their new body; any one of our procedures from a breast lift to a breast reduction can address whichever issue may be problematic for you.
If you’ve experienced dramatic weight loss, whether from pregnancy or not, you are likely a good candidate for the mommy makeover. Our ideal candidates are in good health and have more or less achieved their goal weight and feel like they can comfortably maintain it.
