A well-rounded, shapely derriere is an enduring symbol of attractiveness. Due to genetics, however, some people may not be able to achieve the shape they want no matter how much exercise they do. A square or flat bottom can deter people from wearing tight clothing with confidence. A buttock augmentation procedure can be the answer.
Time and gravity are also the enemies of a firm backside. A buttock augmentation can help turn back the clock and recapture a more youthful shape.
Buttock augmentation surgery is a body contouring procedure designed to reshape sagging buttocks or add volume to a flat behind. Buttock augmentation is done in one of two ways: either fat is taken from somewhere else in the body and injected into the buttocks (a “Brazilian butt lift”), or soft silicone implants are surgically inserted in the buttocks to add volume and create the desired shape. Buttock augmentation can also be combined with a buttock lift.
Of the two methods, the Brazilian butt lift is normally preferred, mainly because the surgery itself is much less invasive, and therefore the recovery time is shorter and less difficult. It also has the advantage of being completely natural. If there are areas of excess fat on a patient’s body, a Brazilian butt lift has the added benefit of slimming those areas down when collecting fat to expand the buttocks.
At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we perform approximately 100 buttock augmentation procedures each year. Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad and Dr. Austin are highly skilled at producing natural-looking results with the minimum amount of scarring.

Buttock augmentation procedures are normally performed under general anaesthesia on an outpatient basis.
There are two different ways of performing buttock augmentation surgery: using fat harvested from other locations on the patient’s body (which is commonly called a “Brazilian butt lift”), or using soft silicone implants. The goal of both methods is to produce a round, natural-looking rear end.
Buttock augmentation surgery usually takes two to four hours, depending on the type being performed.
For a Brazilian butt lift, the first step is to perform the liposuction to collect the fat that will be used for the buttock remodeling. The most common areas from which this fat is taken are the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and upper buttock/lower back. Once the fat is collected, it is carefully prepared for reuse and then injected into the precise areas our Brazilian butt lift patient wishes to enlarge.
This procedure is associated with little to no scarring, as no large incisions are made. Only tiny openings are made in the skin where the liposuction and injections are performed.
Although a Brazilian butt lift may be preferred, there are times when augmentation using implants is necessary. If a patient does not have stores of excess fat that can be harvested, or if a patient’s buttocks are naturally too flat for fat alone to achieve the desired results, then implants must be used to gain the volume needed.
During the buttock implant procedure, two modest incisions are made in the crease of the buttocks (where the scars will be hidden). A space is created underneath the skin and muscle where the implants will be placed. The implants themselves are positioned under or within the tissue in order to prevent the outline of the implant from showing. Occasionally, a small amount of fat (harvested by liposuction) may be used to further shape the edges of the implants to hide them and achieve a natural look.
Your buttock augmentation can be performed right on site in the state-of-the-art facilities of The Plastic Surgery Clinic. The Clinic meets or exceeds national, provincial, and municipal health care facility standards in such important areas as equipment quality and infection control.
If you prefer, you can choose to have your surgery at one of the hospitals where the highly skilled plastic surgeons at The Plastic Surgery Clinic enjoy privileges. These include the Mississauga site of the Trillium Health Centre and the University Health Network in Toronto.
No matter where you choose to have your surgery, there is always a surgeon on call to respond to your concerns. In addition, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer your local or general anaesthetic, stay with you during the entire operation, and be there as you wake up.
The best candidates for buttock augmentation are patients who have a sagging or flat posterior, but also have realistic expectations. This procedure will improve your fullness and curvature, but it is not meant to double the size of your rear end.
Preferably, patients have sufficient excess fat elsewhere that can be harvested for use in a Brazilian butt lift. If not, the implant method must be used.
Ideal candidates are also non-smokers without underlying health conditions that might make surgery riskier than normal. Smokers should quit for at least two weeks before and after surgery, because smoking inhibits healing.
A buttock augmentation can have a positive effect on your self-esteem. Feeling better about your appearance can make you feel better about yourself. Studies show that this kind of surgery often improves quality of life. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with an experienced Toronto/Mississauga buttock augmentation surgeon such as Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad or Dr. Austin.
Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad and Dr. Austin are proud to have helped so many patients in Toronto and Mississauga realize their goals of a shapely backside.
Because surgery of any sort can make patients feel nervous or apprehensive, Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad and Dr. Austin listen carefully to a patient’s desires and provide expert guidance on what each type of surgery can and cannot do. They will carefully explain the potential benefits, as well as the risks, in order to make you feel secure and comfortable with the procedure.
Your consultation will involve a physical examination, including a thorough medical history, and a discussion about your goals with surgery. You will be asked to describe your ideal look; if you can, you should bring in pictures that show body shapes that you admire. Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad and Dr. Austin use digital imaging software to show you what you might look like after buttock augmentation surgery.
Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad or Dr. Austin will spend as much time as you need to make sure both you and your surgeon know exactly what you want. It may not always be possible to meet all your expectations with surgery, so it is crucial that you understand what a realistic outcome is likely to be.
Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad or Dr. Austin will examine you to determine exactly what procedure or combination of procedures will best help you meet your goals. For a buttock augmentation, whether there is enough fat to be used for a Brazilian butt lift or whether silicone implants will be needed will be the central assessment that needs to be made. Your surgeon will work with you to recommend the procedure that will help you come closest to achieving your desired results.
Your board-certified cosmetic surgeon will also instruct you on how to prepare for surgery in order to achieve the best result, including guidelines on eating, drinking, and taking certain vitamins and medications. Smokers should plan to stop smoking for a minimum of one or two weeks before surgery and during recovery, as smoking decreases circulation and interferes with proper healing. You may also be asked to refrain from taking aspirin, anti-inflammation drugs, or certain herbal supplements, as they may increase bleeding during the surgery.
Buttock augmentation surgery is performed at The Plastic Surgery Clinic as a day surgery procedure. A friend or relative will need to come and pick you up and stay with you that evening.
After surgery your buttocks will be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for a day or two, but the pain should not be severe. Any discomfort you do feel can be relieved with medications prescribed by your butt augmentation surgeon. Most swelling and bruising should disappear after four weeks.
You can expect some loss of feeling and numbness, which usually fades as the swelling subsides over the next six weeks or so. In some buttock augmentation patients it may last a year or more, and occasionally it may be permanent.
You should plan to take a week off after your surgery, limiting your activities to staying home, watching TV or reading books. This important time of rest will allow your body to devote its energy to the healing process. It can be of great benefit to make arrangements in advance with a friend or family member for help with activities such as driving. If you are currently looking after small children, plan for an alternative childcare arrangement during this week to help limit the time you will need to spend on your feet. We understand it can be hard to stop completely, but staying quiet in the first week actually speeds healing and helps achieve the best results from the surgery.
Following buttock implant surgery, you should avoid applying direct pressure on the buttock area (including sitting) for at least two weeks. You can stand, walk, or lie down, but you must avoid sitting directly on the healing area.
Pain after surgery is not only uncomfortable, it can also slow down the healing process. That is why the surgeons at The Plastic Surgery Clinic take the time to anticipate their patients’ pain needs in advance, in order to help reduce the time it takes for you to get back on your feet.
They have introduced the revolutionary Pain Relief Pump™ to ease the pain during the first 24 hours after surgery. This MP3 player-sized device is worn in a belt around the waist, with a hair-thin tube connecting it to the surgical site. Completely automatically, the device regularly delivers a long-acting local anesthetic called bupivacaine into the area operated on. The result is that patients feel absolutely no pain. That means that patients do not usually need to take prescription pain medicines, which can be associated with significant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and allergic reactions.
Toronto cosmetic surgery patients at The Plastic Surgery Clinic experience no pain, heal faster, feel happier, have less swelling, and simply recover more quickly. The Pain Relief Pump™ has proven invaluable to plastic surgery patients and is almost exclusively available at The Plastic Surgery Clinic.
Dr. Lista, Dr. Ahmad and Dr. Austin perform approximately 100 buttock augmentation procedures each year. The results are ordinarily positive and complications are rare. Nevertheless, there are always risks associated with surgery, and there are specific complications associated with this procedure. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you thoroughly during the consultation process.
Buttocks augmentation is not a simple operation but it is normally safe when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. Some other outcomes of the surgery can be asymmetry between the two sides, numbness, or pain. When implants are used, an infection may mean that occasionally buttock implants patients need to have them removed.
Post-operative complications such as infection and blood clots are rare. Infection can be treated with drainage and antibiotics, but may require a hospital stay. You can minimize the risk of blood clots by moving around as soon as possible after the surgery. At our state-of-the-art plastic surgery clinic in Toronto, patients are given anti-embolic stockings that they are asked to wear for one week following surgery. We also have a specialized device called a sequential compression pump that gently massages the patient’s legs during surgery and, combined with the stockings, greatly decreases the risk of blood clots in the legs.
Poor healing, which can result in conspicuous scars, may require a second operation. Smokers are advised to quit, as smoking may increase the risk of complications and delay healing.
You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your surgeon’s instructions before and after the surgery, especially with regard to when and how you should resume physical activity.
Please keep in mind that at The Plastic Surgery Clinic, we will treat any complication that may arise. If you have an unsatisfactory result and we think additional surgery will help solve the issue, we will usually perform the surgery for no additional charge.
The improved shape of your buttocks will be evident once most of the swelling has subsided about a month after surgery. You will be able to present a more confident profile and fill out those jeans in the way you always imagined. Even bikinis and yoga pants will no longer cause anxiety.
If you had fat grafting, your final size and shape won’t be evident until after about three months, as your body may absorb some of the fat that was injected. After that you can expect your shape to remain stable, unless you lose or gain large amounts of weight.
Your plastic surgeon will make your scars as inconspicuous as possible, but they will not be invisible. Fortunately, the scars can usually be placed so that you can easily hide them while they are healing. Your scars will be nearly imperceptible once they have completely healed, about nine months to a year after your buttock augmentation surgery.
