Myth: Only Women Get Plastic Surgery

The idea that only women get plastic surgery is perhaps one of the cosmetic industry’s oldest and biggest myths. Sure, perhaps traditionally, women were the primary regulars in the biz. This is not surprising given the types of procedures offered that are primarily geared towards women, such as breast augmentations and mommy makeovers.

But undue pressure placed on women and body image has probably also had an impact on why women might have been the more common plastic surgery clients. That being said, A LOT has changed.

More emphasis on self-care, staying fit and healthy, and feeling good about yourself has seen not only more women turning to cosmetic surgery and treatments, but also more men. After all, men deserve to look and feel great about themselves too! In other words, it’s a total myth that we only see women at our clinic. We see men for all types of procedures. Here are some examples, just to name a few.

Lots of Men Choose Botox and Filler

This might surprise you, but plenty of men get regular Botox and filler treatments. Women are actually not the only ones who age—men do too! And with age, there’s a natural progression of things that happen that can affect the quality of our skin and our overall appearance, like the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, volume loss, and skin laxity.

Botox and filler treatments are just as effective for men as they are for women at treating these concerns (among others, as there are about a million different ways we can use Botox) and they can be a great, subtle option to add volume and also to give the skin that rejuvenating lift and boost.

Gynecomastia, Surgery Exclusively for Men

Some of you may not have heard of this one, but gynecomastia surgery is actually a male breast reduction surgery. Gynecomastia is a pretty common condition that affects anywhere from 40-60% of men, so this is naturally the most popular surgical procedure for men.

Gynecomastia can occur for a number of reasons, some known and some unknown, but in the cases where we are able to determine the cause, most commonly a hormonal imbalance can cause men to overproduce estrogen, which leads to the overproduction of breast tissue. And this can understandably cause a lot of anxiety and affect someone’s self confidence and quality of life.

Luckily, no matter what the underlying cause is, gynecomastia surgery is a simple procedure that can remove excess glandular and fatty tissue in the breasts and bring the contour and shape of the chest in line with the patient’s specific goals while leaving pretty much no scarring.

Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Self-care and overall health is on a lot of people’s radars these days. It’s definitely not only women that you see at the gym or jumping on the Peloton or treadmill. Men also have goals of getting into shape, improving their fitness, and in some cases, of losing excess weight that might be affecting their health. And while exercise and diet can have a big impact on fat loss, often times people who undergo substantial weight loss find they have loose skin remaining that unfortunately can only be changed via a surgical procedure.

In fact, we see a lot of men for body contouring after weight loss procedures. Body contouring procedures like the tummy tuck, arm or thigh lift are often performed when an individual has lost a significant amount of weight and would like to remove excess skin and give the body an overall sculpted and contoured look. And these procedures are definitely not unique to women alone!

Liposuction for Men

Liposuction is one of those procedures that’s super popular amongst both men and women. Sure, in theory, women’s bodies can seem to undergo more significant transformative changes than men’s bodies’ over time, especially due to things like pregnancy and nursing, but there are some things that we all have in common.

Both men and women can find themselves at a point where they have some pockets of lingering and unwanted fat bothering them, like in the abdomen or waist line, maybe in the thighs, that they’d prefer to see gone, and liposuction is a really effective way of giving the body that more contoured form, no matter your gender.

Men’s Rhinoplasty is a Popular Facial Procedure

Rhinoplasty, more popularly known as a nose job, is one of the most common procedures performed in the cosmetic industry and we probably see just as many men for this procedure as we see women.

People seek out rhinoplasty for a number of reasons, whether it be to straighten a crooked nose, or reduce or increase its size, or to change something about the tip of the nose or nostrils, or to improve breathing. Whatever the reason, men, just like women, have their reasons for wanting a nose job too.

Many Older Men Opt for Facelifts

When you think facelift you probably automatically think of women getting it, but again, such a myth! Men are just as exposed to the daily extenuating factors that may lead our faces to change in appearance over time, like over exposure to the sun, stress, and quite simply gravity and time.

The underlying muscles in men’s faces weaken just as much as they do for women. Creases and wrinkles, the loss of volume, skin laxity—none of these things are unique only to women, and women alone are not the only ones bothered about things and are not the only ones that would like to stave off some of the effects of aging to look and feel great about themselves.

Men are just as interested in subtle and natural-looking facelift results. It’s a surgery that boosts their confidence and makes them feel great, as it would and does for anyone who seeks out a facelift.
