Can You do a BBL and Tummy Tuck Together?

It’s sometimes the case that if you’re interested in one cosmetic surgery, you might be interested in others as well. It makes sense. You’ve already made the decision to undergo surgery, which is a really big decision, and you might be thinking, well if I’m already having surgery why not include another procedure?

At The Plastic Surgery Clinic we get asked the question of whether you can have a Brazilian butt lift and tummy tuck together a lot. Many of our patients love the look of a flat stomach and curvy behind, and so do we—it looks great.

So here’s our answer. Is it surgically possible to combine the Brazilian butt lift and the tummy tuck? Absolutely. Do we recommend it? Not really, and here’s why.

Some Surgical Procedures Work Better Together Than Others

You may have heard that it’s actually better to combine surgical procedures because it results in a shorter recovery time; and you’re right, this is totally true. But this really depends on what surgeries you are looking to combine.

A procedure like the mommy makeover, where multiple surgeries (often including breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction) are combined into one operation, does actually amount to less recovery time than if you had all these surgeries done separately. That being said, it’s still a pretty substantial surgery with an extensive recovery period.

The thing with the mommy makeover is that all these procedures work well when they’re combined. The tummy tuck will often already include liposuction whether done with a breast augmentation or not, and the breasts and tummy are all on the same side of the body making surgery and recovery much easier to manage.

Surgery Times and Overall Health

The other thing to keep in mind is the time that each procedure takes. Both the Brazilian butt lift and the tummy tuck are relatively long and involved procedures. In order to combine the two, a patient would have to be in perfect health, meaning that all of their pre-operative labs check out, and they have a healthy weight and BMI, in order to be able to be under anesthetic for a longer period of time and to withstand and undergo that much surgery.

However, the longer you’re under in any kind of surgery, the higher the post-operative risks are, and at The Plastic Surgery Clinic we prefer to play it on the safe side and not open our patients up to any unnecessary risks. Your safety and wellbeing ALWAYS come first.

Recovery After Brazilian Butt Lift and Tummy Tuck

Last, but definitely not least, a major reason why we do not recommend combining the BBL and the tummy tuck, is because recovery would be extremely difficult. Because both the BBL and the tummy tuck are surgeries that are quite complex and lengthy, it means that you’re looking at an extensive recovery period for each surgery.

For the BBL you’re looking at about 1 week off of work, but at least 4 weeks before you engage in any strenuous exercise. And this is really the big recovery hiccup here, for at least 2 weeks you won’t be able to sit on your bum or lie flat on your back, and you’ll probably have to stay off your bum for extended periods of time for several weeks.

With the tummy tuck, you’re looking at a 4-6 week recovery period, at least before you can take up any strenuous exercise, and in the first days following your procedure you may have trouble standing up straight. We’ll also be asking you not to lie on your stomach.

And there’s the rub: if you’ve combined the tummy tuck procedure with the BBL, you’ll need to stay off of your back and bum, which makes it almost impossible for you to lie down, and by default makes rest and recovery so much more difficult. So ultimately your recovery time may end up being longer than if you just had the two procedures done separately.

Taking the time to rest and recover after any surgery is so important. Your body has been through a lot, and the goal of any cosmetic procedure is to achieve your desired result. Allowing your body to recover fully and following your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines super closely are a major part of how you are going to guarantee that you get the look that you want.

Here’s the thing—it is certainly possible to combine the BBL with the tummy tuck into one procedure, especially if you have an amazing and super experienced surgeon performing your surgery. However, a super experienced surgeon will also put your health, safety, and recovery first, and will make sure you’re not taking on too much.

Surgery is a big deal, and shouldn’t be rushed. Sometimes it’s better to take the slightly longer road in order to get exactly what you want and to create the best result possible.
