What You Need to Know About the Liquid Facelift

Most of you have no doubt heard about the facelift. It is one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic surgery and one that we perform very often here at The Plastic Surgery Clinic (as many as 100 in a year, in fact). The facelift is popular because in experienced hands it does exactly what it is meant to do, helping you look on the outside as you feel on the inside: forever young.

For many of us, age really is just a number. Whether you’re 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70, you still feel like you—not you at 25, just your authentic self without the number. But sometimes how we feel on the inside is not reflected on our faces, and we’d like it to be.

The great thing is that if you find surgery daunting, especially surgery for your face, there is a non-surgical facelift option more popularly known as the liquid facelift. The liquid facelift is a great option for many patients who are looking for a non-invasive way to tighten sagging skin, as well as for adding more volume and contour to the face. That said, it’s not for everyone, and some patients may need to explore surgery as an alternative to get the transformative result they want.

That’s why coming to the Plastic Surgery Clinic is great. If we can find a less invasive option for you, we will always go that route. But we also won’t fill your face to oblivion if what you really needed all along was surgery.

What is a Liquid Facelift?

A liquid facelift is pretty much exactly what it’s called. It’s a non-surgical facelift that uses a combination of injectables, dermal fillers (at our practice we use hyaluronic acid based fillers) and neuromodulators in a targeted way in order to restore volume to the face, smooth out wrinkles, and ultimately to lift as well as sculpt the face.

Dermal fillers will primarily add volume to the face whereas neuromodulators will soften and/or prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

Depending on your needs, the liquid facelift targets areas like under your eyes, around your mouth and lips (in some cases we use dermal fillers to plump up the lips), the cheeks, jowls, the area between the mouth and nose, as well as the area just above and around the eyebrows.

Again, depending on your needs you can also combine a liquid facelift with other facial treatments such as peel treatments or skin tightening treatments (radiofrequency and/or microneedling). In fact, we’ll often recommend these types of treatments in order to keep up the results of your liquid facelift.

With age your body begins to produce less of the things needed to bind your skin and keep the skin tight like collagen and elastin. Skin tightening treatments such as Morpheus8 and Viva Nano Fractional will stimulate the natural production of collagen in your body.

We find that the liquid facelift is best for patients who still have relatively good elasticity in the skin, have good skin texture as well as minimal sagging, but are looking to address the loss of volume in areas like the cheeks and to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as crow’s feet.

Keep in mind that the results of a liquid facelift, although really effective and stunning, won’t be as dramatic as a traditional surgical facelift. The liquid facelift is primarily about adding volume to the face and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s not a replacement for a facelift where underlying muscles can be tightened and severe sagging of the skin can be addressed. So if you’re looking for a more dramatic transformation you may want to explore the surgical facelift route.

What Should I Expect from my Liquid Facelift Treatment?

If you’ve had any injectable treatments in the past, the liquid facelift is really no different. You’ll first have a consultation with one of our expert nurse or doctor injectors in order to set out a treatment plan that addresses your needs and goals.

The treatment itself will take anywhere between 15-30 minutes. Your provider will use a very fine needle (or cannula, really just depends on your injector’s technique) that will in most cases contain lidocaine, a built in anesthetic, so you won’t feel any discomfort or pain. Your provider will then inject in the targeted areas that they previously marked for precision.

You’ll be able to see results right away, and they’ll continue to improve over the two weeks following your treatment.

There is really minimal downtime following a liquid facelift. You may see some swelling or bruising or feel tender around the areas that were treated. These will typically resolve themselves within 48 hours of your treatment. That said, you’ll be able to return to your daily activities pretty much right after your treatment and you can resume exercising the following day once your filler has settled.

How Long Does a Liquid Facelift Last?

Although the liquid facelift is super convenient because there’s very minimal to no downtime, and results are more or less immediate, it unfortunately won’t last forever. Depending on the injectable treatments you received and the location in which they were injected, a liquid facelift can last anywhere from 6 months to up to 2 years.

Any neuromodulator injection you received will have to be repeated every 3-4 months in order to maintain the result, and dermal fillers injected around the mouth for instance, may metabolize within the 6 month range. Some fillers have been shown to last longer than 12 months, and your injector can help you determine what kind of timeline is most likely for you.

You will surely get more longevity out of a surgical facelift, which is considered to be permanent though not immune to the effects of ageing. The liquid facelift is often a way to stave off the need for a surgical facelift at a younger age.

How Much Does a Liquid Facelift Cost?

At The Plastic Surgery Clinic a liquid facelift typically starts at $1700 (and we offer our patients different financing options). However, every patient is different and the cost is really dependent on your customized treatment plan and what combination of injectables will be used in order to respond to your particular needs.

You’ll get a firm quote once you’ve had your complimentary consultation and you and your provider have come up with the treatment plan that’s right for you. Come and chat with us about the liquid facelift and see what it can do for you!
