As we step out of 2023 and into 2024, we begin to reflect on the past year of amazing transformations at our clinic. The field of plastic surgery has evolved at unprecedented rates as medicine and technology rapidly advance. The evolution has unveiled exciting new trends that redefine aesthetic enhancements, and we’re so excited knowing there’s more to look forward to in the new year.
From cutting-edge technologies to transformative procedures, this past year was a game-changer for those seeking to enhance their natural beauty. Let’s explore our top plastic surgery trends of 2023, as well as our predictions for the year ahead.
2023 Plastic Surgery Trends
Breast Augmentation
The Plastic Surgery Clinic is truly the home of a masterful breast augmentation, so it’s no surprise that the procedure once again came out on top this year, with breast augmentations making up 23% of all procedures over the past 12 months. This trend is on par with global statistics gathered in the past couple years highlighting breast augmentation as one of the top 5 plastic surgery procedures.
Of course, it’s unsurprising that we’ve performed so many at our clinic—our surgeons are experts in breast surgeries!
Augmentation and Lift
In line with our top procedure, the second most popular surgery at the clinic this year was breast augmentations with lifts. Our very own executive director, Dr. Lista revolutionized the mastopexy (breast lift), by introducing the lollipop method as a replacement to the old anchor method. The new technique involves fewer incisions and therefore minimizes the appearance of scars post-op.
This technique delivers amazing results and is immensely popular. In 2023, breast augmentation with a lift made up 18% of our surgeries.
Liposuction
Coming in at a very close third is liposuction, making up 17% of procedures performed at our clinic in the past year. We’ve said it before, but liposuction is a very versatile procedure that targets an array of areas and concerns. We often performed liposuction in conjunction with other procedures like breast reductions and tummy tucks, but it was also frequently performed on its own according to patient preference, and surgeon recommendation.
Abdominoplasty
And speaking of tummy tucks, our fourth most common procedure this year was the abdominoplasty at 16%. This is also in line with global trends listing abdominal cosmetic procedures as the top 5 plastic surgeries in 2021 and 2022.
Much like liposuction, our tummy tucks were often combined with other procedures. In fact, our most common combined surgery this year was the Mommy Makeover, which involves a tummy tuck and some form of breast surgery, whether it’s an augmentation, a lift, a reduction, or a mix. You could say that the Mommy Makeover is the pinnacle of our top surgeries so far.
Open Cap Breast Surgery
Finally, lucky number 5 in our top five procedures of 2023 was (perhaps surprisingly) breast revision surgery. Whether it was implant replacement, removal, or another breast procedure not covered in the above categories, 15% of our surgeries were breast surgeries this year. You can certainly notice an underlying trend in our top, and the global, surgeries. They all involve the breasts and/or tummy.
We can’t tell the future, but given the trends we’ve been witnessing in the past few years, we can make an educated guess for what 2024 will hold in terms of plastic surgery. We expect that breast augmentations will remain on top, at least here at our practice. Tummy tucks and liposuction will be hard to de-throne, but perhaps we’ll see more fat transfer procedures, like buttock augmentation and fat injections to the face, instead of strictly fat removal.
Once again, only time will tell, but given what we’ve seen so far, we predict that we’ll hover around the same kinds of surgeries into the new year. One thing is certain, however: we will continue to provide customized, quality care to all our patients for each and every procedure they choose.
Year Over Year, We Love What We Do
It’s clear that while the industry continues to push the boundaries of innovation, we are creatures of habit. The popularity of certain procedures has shown us that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
We’ve certainly advanced our techniques for surgery, but, as the numbers show, our patients consistently prefer breast and abdomen related procedures. This should be reassuring; after all, the trend cycle for something as serious as surgery should last longer than and in fact look quite different from the trend cycles we see in different contexts. Even within ever-evolving beauty standards, we consistently work with patients to suit their individual anatomy and goals. At The Plastic Surgery Clinic, we do not subscribe to passing fads—and neither do you, it seems!
Here’s to a year of empowerment, self-expression, and the pursuit of beauty in all its diverse and highly personal forms. If you have any questions or want to share your thoughts on the trends we’ve explored, feel free to join the conversation. Cheers to a beautiful and confident you!
